After the shipping mishaps that I have shared below, I HIGHLY recommend that you purchase insurance. I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PACKAGE ONCE IT’S IN THE HANDS OF THE POST OFFICE. If you purchase insurance and your package gets lost, I will work on getting a claim filed with the Post Office and either reimburse your money when I recieve it, or we can talk about recreating your items. I will take this on a case by case basis.

WARNING! This is what USPS is capable of:

I won this necklace lottery…

I was so excited to see the package come in the mail. I never win anything. I lifted the package out of the mailbox and thought it felt awfully heavy for a necklace. Here is what I recieved in that package…

There was no necklace, but I did recieve a birthday card and a nice check, that wasn’t mine. Some bookmarks from WI, that weren’t mine. Some travel brochures from FL, that weren’t mine. Some gloves, that weren’t mine. A book, that wasn’t mine. A customs form from Tokyo, that obviously wasn’t mine. You get the idea. But, hey, I did recieve some awesome words of wisdom from the USPS…

It gets worse than that. I sold some playfood, market bags and diapers to a loyal customer. This was a very large order worth over $100. It took me 3-4 weeks to make all the things I put in this box. Nearly a month after sending this order, I recieved a letter from the USPS with the shipping label I had taped to the box. BTW, the tape was wrapped around the box 4 times. There was no tearing it off. It was clearly cut. There was even a square cut out where the delivery confirmation sticker was attached. I took copies of all the pictures of the items in the box along with the letter and all other documents down to my local PO. The postmaster is convinced it’s mail fraud, but because there was no insurance purchased, I’m out of luck. Once I get a bunch of paperwork filled out and sent to the “dead letter” place in Minnesota, I might get lucky and they might look for the box. But, most likely, even if they find it, my contents won’t be in it. UPDATE…the box was never found.

The moral to the story…BUY INSURANCE!!! I just wanted to put out the warning that sometimes shipping isn’t as simple as it should be. I can do what I need to do on my end…like using one full roll of tape on 3 boxes…and catastrophes like this still might happen. I can’t control what the post office does with your package once it leaves my hands. You may buy insurance and your box might still get lost. But at least you will be reimbursed the money you’d be out if you didn’t buy insurance.

End of warning…back to your regularly scheduled shopping spree
